Wella business founded in 1880 by a hairdresser
Franz Stroher.

The Twenties:

Company name Wella derived form the German name meaning ‘wave’. In the beginning, products were developed to give permanent waves to the hair.

The Thirties:

Wella partnered with salons and developed a
full service proposition.

The Forties:

Production and innovation continued.

The Fifties:

Wella pioneered an industry revolution with the invention of Koleston Perfect- the first cream colourant that also nourished hair. Koleston is now a leading retail colour brand in many dark hair countries worldwide*.

The Sixties:

Wella recognized the trend of experimentation during this decade and launched Wella Privat. The range was available to buy in salons, enabling consumers to take professional hair-care products home for the first time.

The Seventies:

Wella spawned a new generation of styling products.

The Eighties:

Wella celebrated its 100th birthday.

The Nineties:

Wella continued discovering new ingredients and won important awards. The company took ownership of glamorous U.S. designer brand Sebastian and broadened its beauty portfolio.

The New Millennium:

Wella’s annual hair fashion collections – Trend Vision – became an inspiration to stylists everywhere. The company expanded throughout Asia/Pacific bringing hairdressing innovation to every corner of the world. In 2003, Wella joined Procter & Gamble to become part of the biggest hair company in the world.
